POWER BLACKOUT IN UKANAFUN: Youths Urged to Stop Vandalism and Drug Abuse

A resident of Usung Atiat village in Ukanafun and political stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP), Mr. Uyo Umo , has called on Ukanafun youths to cease the vandalism of electricity installations, which has led to frequent blackouts in the local government area. He also advised them to avoid drug abuse, particularly the highly addictive substance known as “Ice” (crystal methamphetamine).
In a statement on the Townhall Platform, Mr. Umoh expressed concern over the destructive behaviors of some youths, linking these activities to the increasing damage to transformers and electrical cables, which in turn disrupts power supply across Ukanafun. He emphasized the urgent need to protect public infrastructure, stressing that such actions not only harm the community but also reflect poorly on the government.
“We should appeal to the youths vandalizing transformers and electrical cable lines to stay off drugs, especially ‘Ice’,” Mr. Umoh said. “This drug is destroying them and directly affecting the entire local government. A stitch in time saves nine” Mr Umoh said.
The use of “Ice,” a powerful stimulant with dangerous health consequences, has been linked to increased aggression and erratic behavior, which often contributes to the vandalism of public infrastructure. The consequences of these actions are far-reaching, affecting everyone in the community by leading to power outages, disruptions in daily life, and loss of essential services.
The government is urged to take action by setting up security surveillance teams to track down and arrest vandals of public infrastructure. Such measures would help deter the destruction of valuable assets and ensure a more reliable power supply for residents.
In conclusion, Mr. Umoh called for collective responsibility, urging youths to take ownership of their environment by protecting electricity installations and refraining from drug abuse. This, he said, is key to ensuring a better future for the people of Ukanafun and maintaining the stability of public services.
WHAT IS “ICE”
“Ice” is a street name for crystal methamphetamine, a powerful and highly addictive stimulant drug. It is a form of methamphetamine that appears as clear crystals, resembling ice or glass. The drug is usually smoked, but can also be injected, snorted, or ingested orally. It affects the central nervous system, leading to intense euphoria, increased energy, and heightened alertness. However, it is highly addictive and can cause serious health issues, including paranoia, aggression, severe dental problems (often called “meth mouth”), hallucinations, and long-term cognitive damage. Its use is illegal in most countries due to its dangerous effects.
