THE EVOLUTION AND IMPACT OF ANIMATION: From Early Techniques to Modern Productions and Its Financial Benefits—by Etienne U. Ibekwe

Animation extends beyond its creative appeal and has a significant economic impact.

Introduction:

Animation is a captivating process that involves bringing characters, animals, and objects to life through movement. It has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s and has since evolved into a thriving field of art and entertainment. This article explores the journey of animation, from its humble beginnings to its current state as a major industry.

Early Animation Techniques:

During the early stages of animation, a fascinating technique involved fitting a long paper strip with a series of drawings or illustrations into a wide cylinder. Each drawing depicted the same character in slightly different poses. When the cylinder was spun, the drawings seamlessly blended together, creating the illusion of movement. This technique laid the foundation for future advancements in animation.

The Pioneers:

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, animation experienced significant developments. Emile Cohl, a French artist, made over 200 animated short films, one of which was the renowned “Fantasmagorie” in 1908. Meanwhile, in the United States, Winsor McCay became the first animator to create cartoon characters with distinct personalities. His groundbreaking work began with “GERTIE THE DINOSAUR” in 1909.

The Rise of Walt Disney:

Walt Disney played a pivotal role in the history of animation. In the early 1920s, he started making animated cartoons, and in 1928, he released “STEAMBOAT WILLIE,” the first sound cartoon featuring his iconic character, Mickey Mouse. Disney went on to establish Disney Studio in the 1930s, which has since become the largest animation studio in the world.

Modern Animation Techniques:

Today, animation is primarily created using graphic software such as Blender, Maya, Cinema 4D, Krita, and Houdini. These tools enable animators to bring their ideas to life with incredible detail and realism. However, mastering these applications requires training and tutorial classes to acquire the necessary skills.

Types of Animation:

Presently, there are various types of animation techniques employed in the industry. These include:

  1. 3D Animation: This technique involves creating three-dimensional models and characters that are rigged and keyframed to produce lifelike motion. Popular examples of 3D animated movies include “Moana,” “Shrek,” and “Puss in Boots.”
  2. 2D Animation: 2D animation involves the drawing of two-dimensional characters in different poses, which are then blended together to create motion. A classic example of 2D animation is the beloved “Tom and Jerry” series.
  3. Stop-Motion Animation: Stop-motion animation involves capturing photographs of real-life objects, often molded clay, at slightly different poses to create the illusion of movement. “Shaun the Sheep” is a notable example of stop-motion animation.

The Economic Impact:

Animation extends beyond its creative appeal and has a significant economic impact. Countries like the United States, Canada, and India have emerged as animation hubs, generating billions in revenue and creating numerous job opportunities. Animators who specialize in creating these captivating animations have the potential to earn substantial incomes based on their skill and rate of work.

Conclusion:

Animation has come a long way since its early days, with advancements in technology and artistic techniques pushing the boundaries of what is possible. From simple paper strips to complex digital software, animation continues to captivate audiences worldwide. The process of animation is intricate and time-consuming, involving multiple stages, but the end result is a visual manifestation of imagination brought to life.
